`Lord of the Flies’ has been made into a movie at least twice since the William Golding novel of the same name became a cult classic / must read volume for high school and college students in the late 1950s. The first version, which follows the novel very closely, was done in black and white by the noted director, Peter Brook in 1963. The second version was done in color by Harry Hook and released in 1990.

Like many remakes in the same language, one immediately wonders why bother, as the original Brook version is more than gripping enough to convey the message of the novel.

To highlight the differences between the two versions, let me outline the story shared by the two versions.

The scene is set when an airplane carrying school children crashes in the South Pacific, of the coast of a remote tropical island. Approximately 30 of the children, ages 6 to 13 make it to shore and gather on the beach to work out how they are to survive and assume that since they are far removed from their original destination and the island is small and uninhabited, there is a good chance it will take a long time, if ever, for grown-ups to find and rescue them. The first two principle characters are Ralph, one of the two or three oldest boys who we meet first, in the company of an intelligent, bespectacled, slightly overweight boy of the same age known as `Piggy’. The third main character is Jack, about as old and as fit as Ralph. Three minor named characters are Simon, who is prone to fainting and `seeing things’ and Sam and Eric, a pair of twins.

An early vote sets up Ralph as the leader, with a few rules establishing a conch shell found by Ralph and Piggy in the first reel as the symbol of the right to speak to the gathering of boys. Jack immediately assumes the responsibility as leader of a `gang’ (later to become a `tribe’) of hunters who will also take responsibility for maintaining a signal fire which Ralph succeeds in lighting by using Piggy’s eyeglass lens as a means of concentrating sunlight on a clump of tinder.

Jack’s gang gets involved too much in hunting and allows the signal fire to go out just as an aircraft flies near the island. Soon, a story evolves about the presence of a monster on the island. This creates the pretext for Jack to split off from the group with his tribe and create a camp at a more defensible location. As this larger group becomes more and more primitive, they raid Ralph’s camp and steal Piggy’s specs since it is the only means they have for starting fires. To placate the monster, the head of a killed wild pig is cut from its carcass and stood on the top of a pole near the suspected monster’s lair as an offering to the monster.

After a few days, Simon observes this pig’s head and its very large collection of flies feasting on the festering flesh and imagines he hears the pigs head speak to him, hence, the source of the title. Simon is then killed when the hunters mistake him in the night for the monster.

When Ralph and Piggy walk to Jack’s camp to recover Piggy’s specs, Piggy is killed by another `accident’ when Jack’s tribe members pry a large boulder loose that falls on Piggy. Ralph and Jack fight, Ralph is driven off, and the whole tribe sets fire to the jungle to flush out Ralph and, presumably, kill him. Both stories end as Ralph runs to the beach to find himself at the feet of a very professionally uniformed member of his country’s elite armed services.

Hook spices up the dialogue by making the boys much more hip with lots of swear words and references to contemporary popular shows such as Alf and Miss Piggy of the Muppets. Unfortunately, Hook loses the two most important elements of the whole story. In the beginning of the novel and, subtly, in the beginning of Brook’s film, we see that the world is once more at war and the boys from several different schools are on a plane to Australia to find relative safety from the coming (nuclear?) conflict. Hook shows nothing of this, giving us simply a group of boys from the same military academy on a trip to goodness knows where. This totally looses the whole allegorical sense of the story where the conflict between the boys mirrors the war in the world at large, especially the sense of the last scene where the world (island) is destroyed by the conflict (fire).

The second major oversight in Hook’s rendition is that there is never enough attention given to the significance of the pig’s head, Simon’s vision, and the sense of `The Lord of the Flies’. A less important point is that the origin of the monster myth is different in the two movies. Brook’s film follows the book and has it be a misinterpretation of a billowing parachute from a fallen, dead pilot. Hook creates the myth out of the spasms of the downed plane’s delirious pilot as he finds refuge in a cave and is rediscovered by Simon who believes he is a monster.

Both movies do a credible job of depicting the fall of nominally civilized boys into savagery and myth. The combat between Ralph and Jack near the end is straight out of Frazier’s `The Golden Bough’ on the myth of killing the king. Unfortunately, Hook’s version seems as eviscerated as the pig carcass, as all the great allegorical of the original story are totally lost. And, as minimal as they were, I even think the boys’ performances in Brook’s version are better done, as their initial innocence in the face of this loss of civilization makes their transformation all the more interesting.

Brook’s version is highly recommended.

It was a pleasure to see the original version of “Lord of the Flies” again. I’ll be interested in seeing the DVD version as well, to see what additional material comes in that format. Having been one of the boys in the movie, I also appreciated seeing the reviews posted by other Amazon customers! I wonder if any of the other cast members have checked out this site…

I confess to liking the original version far more than the remake, but that’s not surprising, I guess. I TRIED to keep an open mind when I saw the new version, but, alas, I failed. My recollections of running from the burning jungle, coughing, onto the beach at the end makes a black-and-white rendition seem more real to me.

A very nice repackaging of the Flint movies, well worth purchasing by diehard fans. All the principles of the films are now unfortunately dead (including the late great James Coburn, who would’ve added immeasurably to any commentary tracks), but the commentary tracks included are definitely the highlight of this new edition. Two uber movie geeks (sorry, can’t remember their names) bring tons of charm, enthusiasm & wit to the commentaries which are chockablock with endless fun spy-movie/TV trivia. (They, along with the rest of us Flint fans, whine long & hard about the fact that Coburn chose not to continue the series after a mere 2 films—hell, he could’ve at least made it a trilogy.) Additional features on a 3rd disc are pretty lame (including the SUPREMELY lame 1977 made-for-TV movie—a Flint flick in name only with virtually no connection to the Coburn films). Again, the commentaries are what make this collection worthwhile. Highly recommended!!

What’s with these reviews that are simply parroting the DVD contents and Amazon’s own description? Nothing like trying to stuff your review numbers with garbage in an attempt to make the top 1000, 500 or whatever. Make it a real review or shut up!

That said, if you have not seen the Flint movies, do so! Envisioned as a competitor to the James Bond franchise, the Flint movies follow the adventures of secret-agent, super-playboy, part mad-scientist Derek Flint. Played by James Coburn (one of the last people to be personally trained by Bruce Lee), the movies are part tongue-in-cheek with plenty of action. Yes, the special effects are dated, but the plots are still pretty darn good. May people consider the movies to be a simple spoof on James Bond, kinda like the Dean Martin Matt Helm movies. The Austin Power’s telephone ring - taken right off the Flint movies. It’s the telephone ring on the Presidential Hotline to Lloyd Cramden’s. The soundtracks from both movies were recently released - by popular demand. Not bad for 30 year old movies!

In Like Flint: The last film that 20th Century Fox filmed in CinemeScope, this sets Flint against some of the world’s wealthiest women, bent on world domination. How? By brainwashing them with hair-dryers at the Fabulous Face salon, located on a private island…..

OK, so the plots are similar, but come on. Flint making “bloooba, bloooba” sounds - communicating with dolphins. Moving around in space via his sonic belt buckle. Nailing a fly with his cigarette blow-gun. The gymnastic fight scene. The weightless battle in space. All priceless moments. Watch these two movies and you’ll be thinking “so that’s where (insert movie name here) got the idea!”

Those who might be troubled by “racial stereotypes” are failing to see the exquisite beauty of this film, and its place in cultural history; it is an astounding film for all Americans, especially those of African descent, to watch and be proud of.

A melodramatic morality tale, it is about a naive cotton farmer who falls into the net of a pretty but corrupt girl, and his rocky road from sin to redemption.

It also shows the hardship of the life of a sharecropper; the wrenching poverty and backbreaking labor, as well as the faith to survive it all.

Daniel L. Haynes is extraordinary as Zeke. Had he been born 50 years later, he would no doubt have been a major world superstar. Incredibly handsome and charismatic, he was also blessed with a marvelous voice, and great acting ability. Thank goodness this film exists, as a remembrance of his enormous talent.

The other members of the cast are also excellent, with Nina Mae McKinney as the seductive Chick and Fanny Belle DeKnight, as Mammy Johnson, Zeke’s mother who never gives up hope for her wayward son. The scene where Mammy holds the children in her arms and sings a lullaby is one that moves me to tears; this is a film that expresses much love, and the best of human characteristics.

The music is glorious, combining spirituals like “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” with songs like Irving Berlin’s “Waiting at the End of the Road,” and there are also some superb dance numbers. I was particularly delighted by the short but well executed sand soft shoe in the bar scene, a style that started in the early 1910s during the minstrel shows. Tap dancing has its roots in slavery, and the history of this unique American art form is fascinating; anyone interested in the evolution of American dance will love this film.

The b&w cinematography by Gordon Avil is crisp and uses stark contrasts, and for the most part, there is little evidence of its age. Coming from the same era, and with similar themes of good and evil, this film shares a kinship with the DuBose Heyward and Gershwin versions of “Porgy and Bess.” Total running time is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Warner Brothers prior to the film issues a disclaimer apologizing for racial stereotypes depicted in “Hallelujah” that could be potentially offensive to modern audiences. I cannot pretend to speak for the African-American community but I cannot imagine anybody being offended by King Vidor’s film which affirms the sanctity of faith, fidelity, and family. The film follows the personal odyssey of Zeke (Daniel L. Haynes) a decent cotton farmer who tries to lead a good life but is waylaid at various junctures by the temptress, Chick(Nina Mae McKinney) with tragic consequences. Zeke succeeds at one point in the religious ministry only to have Chick scuttle that endeavor. Credit Vidor for recognizing that his characters are essentially good people with flaws that are inherent to everybody. Haynes does a superlative job portraying a man whose moral and religious fibre is constantly being tested. The real revelation here is McKinney, though. Aside from being a visual stunner she manages to engender sympathy for a character saddled with the “Eve” role. What is more amazing is that McKinney was only 16 years old when she tackled this complex character. The film is an accomplishment unto itself but what makes this disc indispensible is the inclusion of two short subjects featuring McKinney and the young Nicholas Brothers.

Perfection in cinema is an almost impossible goal to achieve. Mostly because spectators have varying taste and perspectives. But you can’t help but feel that Wong Kar-Wai’s “In the Mood for Love” is anything short of perfection. The imagery with its lush colors and breathtaking movements is enough to elevate this film. The simple, yet somewhat complicated tale is both heartfelt and authentic. And the performances by Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung are a marvel. But it’s none of these that really makes this film, it’s rather the manner that Kar-Wai so magically molds all these factors to set a mood that I have never felt before while watching a movie. In all honesty, I’m really not too fond of “forbidden love” movies, but this film really startled me.

Ironically, “In the Mood for Love” feels nothing like a Wong Kar-Wai film. It’s a very slow moving film which uses lots of fades and dissolves. The Criterion edition of this film is probably the best dvd package I’ve seen to date. There are just so many extras on it, it’s hard to believe. Deleted scenes, interviews, and promotional material, are just a few of the extras. The way Kar-Wai shoots his films (without a script) also adds to the suprise of picture. You see in the extras how much different the original concept was for “In the Mood for Love.” There is also an alternate ending that seems very plain, but at the same time very heartbreaking.

In the Mood for Love is such a charm despite a very simple plot. The year was 1962. Chow Mo Wan, a newspaper editor, recently moved into a dwelling populated by Shanghai immigrants with his wife. Through casual and accidental encounters Chow exchanged pleasantry with So Lai Jun (Mrs. Chan) who later found out about her husband’s affair with Chow’s wife. Heartbroken and devastated of the cruel truth, Chow buried himself in his job while So indulged in nightly movie screening. They began to let down the guard for one another and spent time during the mahjong sessions of their landlords. The characters forced themselves to abide by inveterate conventions and cultural morale that forbid an affair to become fruition. …

Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung as usual deliver an impeccable performance in this 2001 Wong Kar-Wai release. Leung portraited a man who is unsatisfied about his marriage and denied his spouse’s infidelity. Cheung seizes the empathy of her character who is accustomed to hush about reason for his husband’s frequent absence. Maggie Cheung is elegant and charming in this movie. Not to mention the dazzling wardrobe she wears consistently over the entire movie. Her leg movements are captured in slow motion. Her arms dangling with the thermos meant for the late-night porridge order-to-go from the street vendor.

The movie is shot through a minimalist scope, that is, message is conveyed through very succinct scripts and imagery full of lush colors and meticulously chosen soundtracks. The film is shot in a very stealthy manner; it is as if a pin camera being fastened on the wall of the apartment. Conversations between Leung and Cheung are shot in an eavesdropping manner. The director seeks to de-emphasize other characters in order to focus on Leung and Cheung. Their spouse, respectively, always have their back facing the camera. Their performances are conducted by voices. The gaffer has done an excellent job adjusting the hues of light which is relatively dim throughout.

As a native of Hong Kong (born in mid-70s) who never witnessed the city in glory 60s, In the Move for Love has done me a favor in reminiscence. Wong Kar Wai makes sure everything is done just like when it was the 60s. Yes, even the restaurant menu to which Leung and Cheung skimmed through briefly. It was a green piece of cardboard decorated with some coconut tree clip art. Menu with such heavy Malaysian touch can still be found at local cafés that serve a fusion menu of Malaysian spices and sirloin steaks. Napkins are folded diamond-shaped like paper planes and kept at the far end of the booth. Leung and Cheung sip coffee from flimsy green chinaware cups that hold maybe three gulps. The green vinyl blinds hang unevenly at the office windows. The rotary phone. The subleased rooms where newly-wed couples rent and the kitchen with whom they share with their landlords. The white-collared wardrobe worn by housemaids. These are all the epitomes of lives in the 60s, in Hong Kong. Some find this mmovie a little slow-paced. I savor the manner in which the film is made. I savor all the details, the choice of colors and the tiptoeing scores in the film. 4.6 stars…

It’s great to see that both seasons and the pilot are finally in one package. “Twin Peaks” was a fantastic show that was quite experimental for its time (1990-1991) that at it’s worst was better than most everything else on TV. I wish the show could have survived longer, but with an awful second season time slot - Saturday at 10pm - it had no chance. The revelation of Laura Palmer’s killer took the wind out of the sails somewhat just nine shows into the second season, but the true theme of Twin Peaks was about the evil in the woods that took the form of the killer and the seamy underbelly of what appeared to be everyday small-town life. The murder of Laura Palmer was just the surface of that. Three somewhat pointless episodes followed the one that revealed Laura’s killer, but then the show bounced back with the Windham Earle storyline. Unfortunately many viewers had stopped watching the show by then. Perhaps the lasting legacy of “Twin Peaks” is that it made series with weird subplots, long story arcs, and oddball characters more acceptable to the networks. For example, I don’t think that “The X-Files” could have made it to the air in 1993 had it not been for “Twin Peaks” preceding it and succeeding. After all, after a show where there is a dwarf that materializes on a bed, dances, and talks backwards, an alternate reality where clones are created and sent out to the world, and creamed corn as a symbol of suffering, the adventures of Scully and Mulder look as thematically tame as Dragnet.

This movie is one of the most revealing of the century. It’s ruthless, conniving, sly, smart, irreverent, stupid, and funny as hell. It’ll slam your beliefs, way of life, and everything else you hold dear to your heart. That’s exactly why you have to love it. You have to respect a movie that can do all of that in an hour and a half. If you want to get one of the best comedic movies of the summer, don’t look for American pies or spies who shag people. Look for the movie about 4 demented children and their even more impudent townspeople. It’ll be one of the best movies you’ll ever see, and I guarantee it WILL PISS YOU OFF. I’m a die-hard South Park fan, and even I was offended by some of the dialouge. But that’s exactly what these boys are designed to do, and I love ‘em for it. Many people will try to make you believe that South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut just relies on how much shock it can garner from it’s audience. Don’t fall into that way of thinking: it actually has very touching messages hidden in the sea of profanity and lewdness. And isn’t it always more rewarding when you have to find the messages for yourself instead of getting it served to you on a silver platter? Parents, tuck your children in early if you want to watch it. Kids, see it at your friend’s house. In my personal opinion, I would nominate this movie for several Oscars: Best Picture of the year, Best musical score in a movie, and Best Director (Trey Parker). Everyone I have ever talked to about this movie say that it’s appalling in retrospect. However, they always have to admit: those little guys are funny.

Simply amazing. You can say that it is nothing but fart jokes and toilet humor, but it is so obviously much more than that. What Trey Parker and Matt Stone have done is created one of the most thought provoking and clever comedies of all time and the greatest musical of the decade. Not only is it truly hilarious, it is also one of the most controversial movies of all time. It is mocking the hypocrisies of the MPAA and the average American parenting, as well as many other countless subjects. Not that it isn’t a bad thing I would have rated it the day I saw it, but I decided to look it over more carefully to see all the undertones that it contains. It is also a great musical. With the help of Marc Shaiman, Trey has created greats like “Mountain Town”, the infamous “Uncle F**ker”, the Oscar-nominated “Blame Canada”, the Les Miserables parody “La Resistance Lives On”, and the Disney-based “Up There”. However, it is definitely not for children and actually holds the world record for the most profanity in an animated movie, with 399 swear words, 221 acts of violence, and 128 offensive gestures. This wanton swearing is objectionable, but that aside, this is one of the greatest movies of all time, and not even the angry parents can deny it.

The review I read in the USA Today suggested that this movie was a stinker. But I think the critics dropped the ball. This was a fun movie, and a great choice for the whole family. Evan Baxter is the former Buffalo news anchor who has just been elected to Congress with the lofty campaign slogan “Change the World.”

This inspires God (played by Morgan Freeman) to speak to Evan about building an ark. God is angry that the beautiful Appalachian mountain vistas he has created are being destroyed by those desiring to create huge residential areas. He is upset with those who want to destroy the natural beauty of the world.

Animals start following Baxter around two by two, and (like in the Tim Allen flick “The Santa Clause”) he begins to look like his predecesor (Noah).

Evan becomes alienated from his congressional colleagues and from his family, but by this point in the film, he is convinced that he is doing the work of the Lord.

As the plot unfolded, I started wondering, “Were the animals really necessary to the storyline, since the judgment of God was only falling on one region of the world rather than the entire planet?” But my wife told me that having the animals come to Evan from around the world demonstrated to the people that Evan wasn’t crazy, and that this truly was a move of God.

Secondly, having the animals come to Evan ties this in neatly with the Noah story from Genesis 6.

The movie is not what I would call laugh out loud funny, but there are plenty of cute and heartwarming moments. The message of the film seems to be that we can change the world with one random act of kindness at a time. Both the message and the movie are winners in my book. Recommended.

Evan Almighty was not nearly as bad as reviews and earlier comments from some made it out to be, but also no where near as great as Bruce Almighty was. Both borrowed from the Oh God! series, which borrowed from earlier stories, etc. Though I gave the movie 4 stars in my rating, it’s probably more like a 3.5 star movie (out of 5). Catch it in the right spirit (no pun intended here) and you may consider it a 4 star film. Go in with overly high expectations and you’ll probably be thinking that 3 stars was generous.

Evan Almighty was more formulaic, but still offered up a cute story that is entertaining enough if you go in with reasonable expectations. If you are expecting greatness, then yes, you’ll be disappointed, but if you can accept a touching story that gets (if you’ll pardon the pun) flooded over with special effects, then you could enjoy this movie.

Much more family friendly than was Bruce Almighty, though Bruce Almighty worked better as a comedy because of that while Evan Almighty works better for family entertainment.

This movie looked pretty good on HD DVD. Combo disc format so you can play the movie on standard DVD if necessary (flipper disc, DVD on one side, HD DVD on the other).

I started out thinking the movie was probably best as a rental, but enjoyed it enough to go back and reconsider purchasing. If you can find this one on sale (under $20) it is probably worth adding to your collection. If you are seeing higher prices, wait for a sale perhaps, or try finding a nice used copy from one of the associated sellers.

I used to watch this show when I was younger and I remember being really into it, which is why I bought the first season. It was way better than I remembered. Each episode is so hilareous due to clevar writing and a witty cast. Libby, the mean popular girl, is by far one of the funniest characters and the things Sabrina does to get back at her are hugely entertaining. The Aunts are some of the best supporting characters in sitcom history. My family and I watched the whole sitting in three days. We became semi-addicted to it, plus it flys by so fast. Each episode is paced so well that it’s not to fast, but it never gets boring. It’s a perfect blend of everything you could want in a family friendly sitcom. This is not just for kids or teens, it’s for everyone. I can’t wait until Season 2 gets released in July and I hope Paramount eventually releases the entire series.

The worst thing about this release is that there are no bonus features. Not even a commentary or a cast retrospective. I still give it 5 stars because the complete series was what I bought it for, but it would have been nice to have Melissa Joan Hart come back and talk a little bit about the show. I mean, it was such a big part of her life. As other people have pointed out, some of the music isn’t original due to copyright issues. I can’t remember any of the original music from when I used to watch the show, but I didn’t think any of the songs sounded out of place, so for the average viewer like me, it shouldn’t distract from your enjoyment of the DVDs.

One of the best things about this season set besides the show itself is the case. I have run out of room for big season box sets. Even though this is a 4-disc set, it comes in a standard DVD case. The case is like your standard 2-disc case, but there is a DVD on each side of the physical case and a hinged plastic flap holds the other two discs very nicely. I shook it around and none of the discs flew off their hinges. Very nice packaging.

I highly reccomend this season to everyone. No matter who you are (guy, girl, old, young) you are sure to find something entertaining in “Sabrina The Teenage Witch.”

Sabrina has been a great success in syndication, so much so that it probably delayed its DVD release. It has circulated through the cable networks constantly since before the series finished its original network run, often on more than one cable oulet at a time. I hope this long exposure does not suppress DVD sales and discourage future releases. The show was great in the first season, but really hit its stride in season 2. DVDs for the second (and third) season should follow quickly this release.

A really good war movie, perhaps in part because it was so relatively unexplored in film. It is the story of a German working class soldier (”common as dirt”, as characterized by his General, played by James Mason) named Bruno Stachell (who is well-portrayed with icy self- assurance by George Peppard) man. Stachell leaves the trenches in World War One and becomes an ace in the German flying corps which is populated by officers and gentlemen. His obsession is a medal - hence the film’s title - awarded to aces, and his colleagues, commanders and the British Air Force won’t keep him from it.

Predictably, he rebels even as he never fits in with his comrades. It is illustrated well by his response to his first kill (which sadly goes unconfirmed even after he went scouring the countryside for the plane he shot down). He “responds” by getting his first confirmed kill by shooting down the next enemy plane over his own airfield. While his betters who populate the squadron never cease to remind him of his place, he continues up the ranks to best them all while ridiculing their so-called code of honor. “Chivalry?” he sneers. “To kill a man and then make a ritual out of saluting him is hypocrisy.”

It has great flying battle scenes. Also, a wonderful supporting cast including the aforementioned Manson, his slutty aristocratic wife (the magnificent Ursula Andress) and a stick-up-the-butt colleague/rival fellow officer (Jeremy Kemp). Karl Vogler plays von Heiderman, the Commanding Officer who refuses to let go of his notions of warfare with honor, in the face of the barbaric commencement of the 20th century.

I disagree with the reviewer who says Peppard was out of his depth in this role. He plays the part of the anti-hero very well. I was even more impressed after reading that he did his own flying in this film.

It is very long, but worth the time.

This is one of those films that seems to get better with age. It is the story of a low-born warrior Bruno Stachel (George Peppard), who by force of will and talent, rises out of a common foxhole and into the cockpit of a fighter airplane in the closing days of WW1. It is his arch-nemesis, the aristocratic flying ace Willi von Klugermann,(Jeremy Kemp) who keenly observes Stachel’s ruthlessness and nicknames him “Cobra”. The aerial flying sequences are breathtaking and plentiful, many of the aircraft were constructed for the making of this movie, unlike computer generated duplications so common today. The slow cadence and almost hesitating sound of unreliable machine guns firing from the flimsy aircraft they were fitted to is striking testament to the sound editors art. Stachel’s ambition for glory “in and out of bed” is unmatched by his well-born and condecending comrades. But in the end, his destiny is inexorably tilted by an unyielding competitiveness, a beautiful countess (Ursula Andress),her shrewd and powerful husband Count General von Klugermann,(masterfully portrayed by James Mason), and a demoralized, desperate Germany in the waning days of WW1. The production values of this film are excellent, the sets striking, and obvious attention to historical detail is evident. Jerry Goldsmith’s musical score ties a compelling story line together with subtle variations of a hauntingly beautiful musical theme. It is my hope this film will be digitally remastered for DVD release.

I’d have to say I was disappointed when I first saw the first episodes of Unlimited. It was named Final Fantasy, but very little linked it to the incredible video game series of the same name. The story seemed immature and generic and not interwoven with many character driven side stories; only the Final Fantasy mascots appeared (Chocobo, for one); and the music didn’t reflect the classical style that went with the games. So, needless to say, I didn’t bother buying anymore of the DVDs in the series.

Then the box set came out, and I admitted to myself that I was at least curious about how this series would end, plus I had learned that Gonzo made Unlimited, and Gonzo has yet to fail me in any of my anime endeavors. I bought it, and I watched the first episodes again. I cringed, because suddenly I felt the same way and even found a few more things I disliked about it. But I didn’t stop, and continued to watch, and found that, slowly, this series evolved. It became emotionally driven, with a lot of elements that made Final Fantasy great. There were mascots galore (the stated chocobo, cactuar, moogles, summons, and Cid). Some of the music heard can be heard in previous games (the opening song–not the title song–and the battle victory).

Still, it wasn’t as Final Fantasy as its namesake, but I found that in watching the anime the entire way through that that was okay. Though it isn’t a good chapter in Final Fantasy, it’s a great stand-alone anime nonetheless. It has great animation, a strange style that seems both classical and cutting edge (Astroboy with CG). The story deepens as the two main characters search for their parents, and other story lines reveal themselves as well, such as Kaze’s story, the main character in charge of a powerful gun capable of summoning creatures into battle, and Lisa, a martial artist with the power to control elements. The antagonists also turn into something more than they had been in the beginning. A deeper, more sinister foe appears later, one that adds a sense of dread to the story that wasn’t there previously. All in all, it adds up to one decent anime. And the value itself can’t be beaten. Twenty-five episodes of anime for less than fifty-bucks.

It’s difficult, however, to recommend this anime. I’d only recommend this to Final Fantasy fans who don’t take the game too serious. If you do, you’ll be disappointed with this anime. I’d also recommend it for anyone who enjoys experimentation in their animation. If you enjoyed Kid’s Story in the Animatrix, you’ll enjoy this.

When I first heard that there was a Final Fantasy series that was to be introduced as a DVD series in the US I was quite excited. Certainly, as a game series, Final Fantasy has consistenly hit high marks in both story and graphics. It seemed reasonalble to expect that the series, coming out at the same time as other series that have shown landmark levels of quality would be something to watch. Alas, that is not the case.

A great tower of light suddenly plunges into the modern world, and titanic monsters appear in epic battles. The world changes subtly as a darker presence begins to take possession of the shadows. A pair of research scientists start an investigation, but disappear right after they publish a book about a strange underground world that seems to have appeared right under our feet. Now it falls to Yu and Ai Hayakawa to try and find their parents. The board an odd subway train, and are transported to…Wonderland.

In this DVD we take our first tour of wonderland, as the young children discover the mysteries and threats that surround then and acquire new companions like Lisa, who has her own special variety of ‘martial arts,’ and Kaze who uses a magical gun to carry out his role as a summoner (remember FF8 and FFX). At present the story stays focussed at this level, a bit more fight and adventure oriented, although I expect that the serious story arcs will gradually become more important.

While the work is acceptible as standard Saturday morning cartoon fareit really lakes the flair that marks most Final Fanasty work. In fact, other than some creatures like Chocobos, it really has very little in common with the Final Fantasy game series. Scripting and character development are minimal, aimed at an audience that isn’t quite ready for the complex relationship building which marks the show’s namesakes. And the artwork is interesting in spots, but more cartoon-like, reminiscent of than the originals.

A quick glance at the credits shows that there is very little cross over between the game creators and the series staff. This explains many of the little gaps that make the show confusing for a long time fan. If one approaches this as an independent work rather than as an heir to one of gaming’s greatest lineages, then it is an acceptable and entertaining series. Buy if you are looking for the world of Gaia, peopled with Yuna’s, Strife’s, and Vivi’s you are going to be disappointed, as I was.
